Bourbon Barrel Coffee-An Interesting Trend. Is It Worth Checking Out?

Recently, I was corresponding with a coffee company and they mentioned their bourbon infused coffee was one of their top sellers. This surprised me. If you keep tabs on a few favorite coffee roasters or get the occasional promotion coffee email, you might have noticed this trend too. More and more roasters are advertising bourbon barrel coffee programs and featuring bourbon infused coffee.

I poked around on the internet a bit and was bombarded with companies doing bourbon coffees. You can find coffee infused with Blanton’s and Jack Daniel’s. There are even infused K-cups (these are likely done with artificial flavorings). Good Folk’s roasts a coffee for Pappy and Co. that is aged in Old Pappy barrels.

It is not just bourbon either. Roasting companies are featuring tequila, rum, red wine, white wine and plain ol’ whiskey infused coffees.

If you don’t know much about bourbon barrel coffees you may have a few questions: How did this bourbon and spirits infusion trend get started? What exactly is bourbon barrel coffee? Are spirit infused coffees different from flavored coffees? And maybe most importantly, does the finished product contain any alcohol?

Let me unpack some of these questions.

Book Review- The Philosophy of Coffee By Brian Williams

Over a year ago, a fellow coffee blogger and friend of mine, Brian Williams, sent me a copy of his book, The Philosophy of Coffee. It was my intention to read it and feature it in a post before the book became available in the U.S. (September 2018) but, alas, time does have a way of slipping through one’s grasp. Here we are, mid April 2019, and I wanted to let my readers know about the book and, if you have not found his blog yet, Brian himself.

Brian Williams, author of the blog Brian’s Coffee Spot, published a book with The British Library early last year. The Philosophy of Coffee is a concise volume giving an overview and introduction to coffee.

The British Library is the national library of the United Kingdom. They boast a collection of over 150 million items in all sorts of mediums. You can check out their website www.bl.uk to browse their digital collection. You can also find a few books of a similar breadth and format from the British Library such as The Philosophy of Beards.

The Philosophy of Coffee is a handsome, baby blue hardcover book, featuring a Moka Pot on the font and the spine (it looks quite charming sitting on the shelf next to my other coffee literature). It is very reasonably priced and would make a great gift, especially with the addition of a bag of quality craft coffee.

Looking for a Travel Mug?-Some Travel Mugs Worth Considering

Since I started consuming coffee and commuting to work (two activities that began almost simultaneously), I have had an interest in travel mugs. While I strongly prefer to drink coffee out of a ceramic mug, I am far too accident prone to carry around a mug of coffee and expect the result to be anything but disappointing.

Needless to say, I have owned quite a few travel coffee mugs over the years. Recently I have been using three travel mugs on and off in a rotation as the situation dictates and I thought I should profile and review them.

Here are overviews of the Liquid Hardware Aurora Vacuum Insulated Coffee Mug, Miir’s eight ounce tumbler and the modular 12 ounce Keep Cup. They are all distinctly different and I have entrusted many carefully hand brewed milliliters of delicious coffee to the trio these last six months.
